Swedish mining and infrastructure equipment manufacturer Epiroc has officially opened an expanded manufacturing facility for rock drilling equipment in Hyderabad, India.

The facility spans an additional 5,280m² of land next to Epiroc’s existing plant. It will produce rock reinforcement products aimed at improving mine safety, as well as rotary and down-the-hole (DTH) drilling tools, which are critical for effective and efficient drilling operations.

Production at the new facility is due to commence next month.

This development is part of Epiroc’s strategy to bolster the mining industry both within India and on a global scale by providing products and solutions that improve safety and productivity.

Epiroc’s president and CEO Helena Hedblom said: “This expanded production capacity in India of high-quality rock reinforcement and rock drilling tools strengthens our long-term commitment to the important and growing Indian market as well as to our customers across the globe.”

Epiroc previously doubled the plant’s capacity in 2017 and is now further enhancing it to cater to increasing demand from customers.

The expansion will also contribute to the local economy by creating approximately 35 new jobs, adding to the current workforce of around 300 at the Hyderabad production site.

Epiroc India president Arunkumar Govindarajan said: “By investing in local manufacturing and increasing our capacity we support our customers’ growth while contributing to sustainable productivity and innovation in the mining sector. The investment also supports our ‘Make in India’ initiatives.”

The ground-breaking ceremony for the facility took place in September 2024, coinciding with the opening of a new innovation and technology centre in Hyderabad.

Earlier this month, Epiroc fully acquired Radlink, an Australian company specialising in wireless connectivity solutions for mines.
