Sandvik has introduced a new 16l Stage V engine option for its Toro™ TH551i 51-tonne i-series truck. This 585kW-output engine from Volvo Penta delivers more power than the preceding Tier 4i, allowing higher speeds and improved productivity. To achieve strong and reliable performance in demanding conditions, the engine system has been developed to seamlessly fit together with the proven underground truck design.

State-of-the-art technology for shorter cycle times and reduced emissions

With its new Stage V engine option, Toro™ TH551i offers more power and speed compared to the 515kW Tier 4i predecessor, shortening cycle times. As the engine output power exceeds 560kW, instead of fitting the truck with a diesel particulate filter, other means are utilized to reduce emissions: the truck exhaust after-treatment system contains a Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR) that uses diesel exhaust fluid to reduce emissions of NOx without sacrificing performance or fuel-efficiency. The common rail injection and dual-stage turbocharging provide high power density, low fuel consumption, low noise and low emissions. Further, optimal cooling solutions in the engine minimize parasitic energy losses.

The Stage V engine requires ultra-low-sulphur fuel and low-ash engine oil to operate. In addition to running on traditional fossil diesel, Toro™ TH551i can also use paraffinic diesel fuels that meet the requirements of the EN 15940 standard. Renewable paraffinic diesel fuel considerably reduces the greenhouse gas footprint and engine exhaust emissions.

Operator speed assist for safety and ease of operation

For improved safety and easier operation specifically in downhill driving, Toro™ TH551i features Sandvik’s operator speed assist functionality as standard. The speed assist function can be set to limit the truck top speed automatically, allowing the operator to focus on driving. The system identifies whether the truck is driving on level or on an incline, and the control system selects the correct speed limit values without any action required from the operator. As the engine brake is used as the primary speed control, the operator speed assist reduces brake wear. Engine wear is also reduced since engine RPMs are maintained on the optimal level.

Continuous development of the 51t and 63t trucks

Toro™ TH551i and Toro™ TH663i, Sandvik’s two largest i-series trucks, have benefitted from several significant improvements in recent years. In 2019, Sandvik introduced a new transmission to increase productivity, improve reliability and reduce operating costs, as well as a new durable and maintenance-friendly cooler with outstanding corrosion resistance and long component lifetimes. Last year brought updates to the automation performance, as Sandvik’s AutoMine® offering introduced its AutoMine® for Trucks, enabling autonomous truck haulage not only underground but also on the surface, which is an inevitable part of a truck’s normal duty cycle at many mines.
