Scheerer Bearing Corporation, a US manufacturer of roller and ball bearings, recently added a mechanical engineering intern to their staff. This summer, Ronald A. Price, a senior at Temple University’s College of Engineering, has been learning firsthand how to problem solve within the process of manufacturing high-quality, large-size, standard and custom bearings as large as 100 inches OD.
Price is the first intern in a program that the company recently started. He comes to Scheerer Bearing with mechanical engineering experience that is culminating in his senior design project at Temple University "Rapid Extraction Devices" where he is designing and developing a rapid set-up, collapsible stretcher for use by the US Military, using several composite materials.
"Scheerer Bearing is about growth, and for us incorporating the next generation of engineers fresh from the classroom into our production of quality bearings is a win-win situation. We benefit from their new ideas while they gain hands-on experience to build their future," said George Rymar, CEO, Scheerer Bearing Corp. Rymar also noted that Price has been an asset in his time with Scheerer Bearing thus far, and that Scheerer Bearing plans to grow their internship program with additional engineering and administrative interns.
While interning with Scheerer Bearing, Price’s efforts include working to optimise manufacturing machines, assisting with analysis and assembly for QC, and cataloging documentation. According to Price this internship is invaluable thanks to the opportunity to learn the various machines and processes as a supplement to his classroom experience. "This real-world experience with real-world constraints has already furthered my understanding of the entire manufacturing process from design to final production," says Price.
