ISO 51001 has been developed as a management systems standard for industrial plants, commercial facilities or entire organisations to manage energy. The draft standard, issued in July 2010, is based on the common elements found in all of ISO’s management system standards, assuring a high level of compatibility with ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management). The draft standard differs from the current Australian standard AS 3598:2000 Energy Audits, which focuses on technical performance audits of energy use. The new standard will potentially provide a basis for systems-based auditing as well as performance reviews.
