Three Kemira personnel whose efforts are focused heavily on mining have recently been honored by industry organizations for their contributions toward advancing new technologies.
Mika Martikainen, senior research scientist for minerals and metals in Kemira’s Espoo, Finland R&D center, has been named a keynote speaker at the Annual Meeting of the Advanced Sustainable Iron & Steel Making Center (ASISC), to be held in Houghton, Michigan, from 8-10 August 2012.
Mika will speak on Wednesday, 8 August at 1pm during the Pelletization and Thermal Processing Session, sharing his expertise in the properties and usage of synthetic polymer binders in iron-ore pelletization.
Mika has led Kemira’s technical development of KemPel™ organic binders since 2008, overseen the commissioning of pilot-plant facilities in Espoo, and liaised with globally-leading iron-ore pellet producers to bring beneficial, non-bentonite choices and solutions to this industry.
Lucas Moore, senior research scientist for minerals and metals in the Atlanta, Georgia R&D center, has been selected by the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) to be one of only five Henry Krumb Lecturers for the 2012 – 2013 program. Local SME sections will now have the opportunity to request that Lucas speak at their meetings on the topic on which his selection was based, methods for removing arsenic from process water.
As Lucas describes in his paper, common treatment technologies to address removal of this contaminant from mine water streams include oxidation, coagulation, absorption, and media filtration; however, successful implementation of some of these options may be limited by variables like total dissolved solids, the presence of other ions, and the oxidation state of the arsenic. An innovative technology falling in the absorption category has been developed that can reduce the most common aqueous oxides of arsenic (arsenates and arsenites) to a level below EPA’s recommendations. This new technology offers a unique and viable solution which is transparent to the above limitations.
Sergio Cabo, vice-president of sales for Kemira Oil & Mining in South America, will address the LatAm Mine Water Conference, to be held in Rio de Janeiro on 29-30 August 2012, on the topic of tailored chemistry and application closing beneficiation gaps. His remarks will cover contaminant-removal chemistries, high-solids thickening, and beneficiation process improvements.
Following this presentation at 4.40pm on 29 August, Sergio will participate in an interactive panel discussion of best practices adopted by the mining industry for more efficient use of water resources.
