BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has plans to invest $204m in the Caval Ridge Southern Circuit (CRSC) capital growth project at Bowen Basin, Central Queensland, Australia.

An 11km overland conveyor system, CRSC will be used to transport coal from Peak Downs Mine to the Coal Handling Preparation Plant (CHPP) at the nearby Caval Ridge Mine.

This project is expected to create 400 new construction jobs and approximately 200 ongoing operational roles.

It will enable the Caval Ridge preparation plant to increase its throughput to reach its annual capacity of ten million tonnes.

According to BHP Billiton Minerals Australia Operations president Mike Henry, the project is the missing link between the two mines, and will accelerate growth and productivity.

Henry said: “This investment furthers our productivity agenda, reduces costs, releases latent equipment capacity, and strengthens our coal business’ global competitiveness.

“We are committed to Queensland’s Bowen Basin and this project creates new employment opportunities during construction and locks in ongoing operational roles. The investment flowing from the project will help support the local community and state economy after what has been a difficult time in the region."

The construction is slated to begin shortly and will be completed within 18 months.

In addition to the new conveyor and associated tie-ins, the project also comprises a new stockpile pad and Run-of-Mine station at Peak Downs.

"The investment flowing from the project will help support the local community and state economy after what has been a difficult time in the region."

The existing CHPP and stockyard at Caval Ridge will be upgraded.

BMA will also invest in a new mining fleet, including excavators and trucks.

BMA is a coal miner and exporter, as well as a supplier to the seaborne coking coal market.

BMA was formed in June 2001 as a partnership between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi Development, under which the two companies share equal ownership and management of eight Central Queensland coal mines.
