Newcrest Mining has said that its gold production for the quarter ending 30 September was 674,219oz, a 79% rise from 377,084oz a year ago.

The increase in production has been boosted by the acquisition of Lihir Gold, Newcrest said.

However, the company’s copper output for the quarter fell by 16% to 17,693t, down from 21,289t during the same period in 2009.

Newcrest aims to produce between 2.85 and three million ounces of gold in 2010/11.

The company seeks to produce 1.27 million ounces for the next five years from the Lihir mine in Papua New Guinea.
