Global: The global coronavirus death toll is 1,007,769 according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University. More than 33.6 million cases have been confirmed.
The director general of the World Health Organization described the one millionth death as a “difficult moment for the world”. Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus urged urged countries to ‘bridge national boundaries’ to fight back against the virus and said it was never too late to turn the tide on the disease.
Becton Dickinson & Co.’s Covid-19 test that returns results in 15 minutes has been cleared for use in countries that accept Europe’s CE marking, the diagnostics maker said Wednesday.
US: Covid-19 extended its march across the Midwest on Tuesday, with the surge in North Dakota looking similar to Florida’s two months earlier. Cases were also on the rise in South Dakota and Wisconsin.
India: India could have 60 million Covid cases: ten times the official figure. On Tuesday, the country’s lead pandemic agency cited a nationwide study measuring antibodies. According to official data, India is the world’s second most infected nation, with more than 6.1 million cases, just behind the US.

Global: The World Bank has announced plans for a $12bn (£9.3bn) initiative that will allow poor countries to purchase Covid-19 vaccines to treat up to 2 billion people as soon as effective drugs become available.
US: Seven former Food and Drug Administration commissioners appealed for the agency to decide on coronavirus vaccine approvals free of political interference, to gain public trust and help combat the pandemic.
Lockdown updates
US: San Francisco moved into a less-restrictive classification under California’s tiered guidelines for reopening the economy, paving the way for the city to reopen more businesses. The county, with a test positivity rate of 2%, is the only part of the Bay Area to have improved to a “moderate” status in the state’s tiers.
Germany: Germany is taking aim at public and private parties, joining several other European countries in stepping up restrictions to contain a resurgent wave of coronavirus infections.

South Africa: The number of people who work in South Africa fell to the lowest level in almost a decade in the second quarter as a lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic resulted in 2.2 million job losses.
