Cimic Group's mining unit Thiess has secured a A$240m ($155.49m) nickel mining contract from PT Halmahera Sukses Mineral in Central Halmahera, Indonesia.

The contract, which has a period of 3.5 years, marks the second venture for Thiess in the Indonesian nickel market this year.

Under the latest contract, Thiess will be responsible for the delivery of full mining operations including mine development, haul road construction, ore loading and hauling.

Thiess executive chair and CEO Michael Wright said: "We are excited by this new contract award, which underscores Thiess' expertise and strong track record in the Indonesian mining industry.”

The nickel mine is situated in Central Halmahera, North Maluku, 6km from another Thiess-operated project.

Thiess Asia group executive Cluny Randell said: "This contract win aligns with Thiess' strategy to diversify our commodities portfolio. Our focus on safety, technological advancement and inclusion sets us apart. We are excited to continue building strong partnerships in the Indonesian nickel sector."

Earlier this year, Thiess received a mining expansion contract from PT Harum Energy at the Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ) mine in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The contract scope expands the current mining operations, which include load and haul, drill and blast, haul road maintenance and rehabilitation.

At that time, Thiess said it plans to introduce its first autonomy programme at the MSJ mine as part of its sustainable mining practices to enhance safety and production efficiency.
