Indonesian nickel: new issue of MINE live now!

In this issue: the future for the world’s leading nickel producer; autonomous drilling in exploration; powering mines in extreme temperatures, and more.

Caroline Peachey April 03 2025

In the April 2025 issue of MINE magazine, we look at Indonesia's nickel mining landscape, explore how critical minerals supply chains are impacting the defence sector and examine some of the tech trends shaping exploration drilling.

Indonesia’s nickel industry has seen “dramatic growth” over recent years, with its global share of mined nickel production rising from 16% in 2017 to around 50% in 2023 – but this growth did not come without challenges. We look at what is next for the nation, from decreasing quotas to raising royalties.

Elsewhere in commodities, we examine the minerals requirements for defence applications and delve into the US’ actions to shore up its domestic reserves. GlobalData also provides insight into the US-Ukraine critical minerals deal.

Turning to technology, we review some of the challenges miners face in powering operations in extreme climates, sharing some practical tips and actions to address and adapt to complications.

We also explore whether autonomous drilling technology – already established in production – is shaping minerals exploration.

A look ahead to bauma 2025

Plus, we look ahead to bauma 2025 and the equipment innovations that will be on display in Germany from 7–13 April.

This year’s event has a specific focus on exploring the challenges facing the global mining industry and will showcase some of the “innovative solutions [that] will be used to make mining even more efficient, safe and sustainable in the future”.

Overall, bauma 2025 is expected to welcome some 3,500 exhibitors from 57 countries, with the mining exhibition featuring more than 200 companies that offer machinery or solutions for minerals extraction and processing, and raw materials handling.
