Chile state-owned mining company Codelco has signed an LOI with ABB to explore a strategic collaboration aimed at decarbonising its mining operations.

The partnership will focus on deploying digitalisation, automation and electrification solutions at existing and future mining projects to meet Codelco's net-zero targets.

The collaboration will identify innovation needs to drive more sustainable operations and operational excellence at Codelco's sites.

This includes the potential electrification and automation of mining fleets and operations, as well as the implementation of digital systems.

Codelco mining resources, development and innovation vice-president Nicolás Rivera said: “There has been significant interest by both parties to work towards decarbonisation goals together for some time, including site visits and technology discussions.

“We have strong ties with partners and collaborators around the world for the globally significant mining operations we have in Chile. Announcing our intentions with ABB is an important step we are pleased to make.”

ABB's role in the partnership will be to enhance safety, productivity, operational expenditure and availability at Codelco's various open-pit and underground mines, as well as its large-scale processing facilities in Chile.

The decarbonisation and technological innovation projects may extend to the handling and transport of materials within Codelco's mines, utilising ABB's eMine solutions.

ABB Process Industries division president Joachim Braun said: “Mining is evolving faster than it has done before, and only by all parties working together can we meet the demands coming from the wider world.”

Last month, Codelco acquired a 10% stake in the Quebrada Blanca mine in northern Chile from the National Mining Company.
