Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has awarded a £95m ($127m) order to Weir Group to provide aftermarket components for the Iron Bridge magnetite project.
The Iron Bridge project is a magnetite mine located 145km south of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia (WA).
It is owned by a $2.6bn joint venture (JV) between FMG subsidiary FMG Magnetite (69%) and Formosa Steel (31%).
The latest agreement will be valid for a period of seven years starting from 2022, in line with the initial production of the magnetite project.
Weir Minerals president Ricardo Garib said: “This is another landmark order for Weir. Having helped design an energy and water efficient magnetite processing plant, we are delighted to provide operational support for Iron Bridge from 2022.
“It is an excellent example of the value that Weir’s innovative engineering and close customer support can create for all our stakeholders and reflects the key role we have to play in making mining operations more sustainable and efficient.”

By GlobalDataWeir noted that the order follows a £100m ($133m) contract last year for the supply of original equipment at Iron Bridge, which included Weir’s Enduron high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) for the dry processing of ore.
These HPGRs use at least 30% less energy compared to traditional alternatives.
To support the magnetite project, Weir will build a new service centre in Port Hedland, Western Australia.
Through the new service centre, the group plans to create employment and training opportunities in the region.
Weir Minerals Netherlands managing director Stuart Hayton said: “This is an important project for Weir and for the broader mining industry. We know comminution is one of the most energy intensive parts of the mineral process and with our Enduron® HPGRs we have a unique ability to offer significant cost, energy and water savings to customers around the world.
“As the mining industry evolves we are commited to continuing to innovate, reducing miners’ costs and environmental impact.”
In February, FMG awarded bulk earthworks contract to NRW Holdings for the Iron Bridge magnetite project.
