Vertex Minerals has initiated the commissioning of a newly installed ore sorter/pre-concentrator at its Hill End Gold plant at the Reward gold mine in Australia.

The new sorter utilises TOMRA LASER sorting technology to improve gold recovery rates.

The integration of this advanced sorting system is expected to enhance the plant’s efficiency and sustainability.

Vertex’s executive chairman Roger Jackson said: “The ore sorting installation and commissioning is very exciting as this presents incredible commercial and environmental benefits for Vertex. It has been shown that Reward Gold ore is perfectly suited for this technology.

“By upgrading the Reward high-grade ore material to an even higher grade, significantly reduces the processing costs and increases the returns per tonne.”

The company claims that the success of the Reward Gold sorting is largely due to the TOMRA LASER system’s ability to accurately detect and separate quartz from low-grade host rock. This precision is essential as the gold is reliably associated with quartz in the ore.

Furthermore, TOMRA’s LASER sorting technology effectively separates gold-bearing quartz ore from waste materials such as slate and greywacke before it enters the processing plant.

Vertex believes that the adoption of ore sorting technology will have a positive impact on the sustainability and profitability of operations at Reward.

The Reward gold mine has reported a 79% reduction in mass and a 337.2% increase in grade for particle sizes ranging from 8mm to 50mm.

By processing significantly higher-grade ore post-sorting and reducing the volume of feed tonnes, the plant can achieve reduced running time, operator hours, and energy and water consumption, according to the company.

These efficiencies are expected to lead to lower operating costs and a reduced carbon footprint.

Furthermore, the volume of tailings material, primarily sand, can be decreased, offering additional environmental, social, and governance benefits and cost savings.

Technicians from TOMRA are on-site this week to commission the laser sorter and integrate it into the Hill End Gold plant’s operations.

This commissioning phase coincides with the ongoing commissioning and processing of gold ore by the gravity concentrator.
