CIMIC Group subsidiary Thiess has secured a A$225m ($165.85m) contract with BHP Nickel West to continue to provide mining services at the Rocky’s Reward nickel mine in Western Australia.
Rocky’s Reward is an open pit mining operation located within BHP Nickel West’s Leinster mine complex, around 400km north of Kalgoorlie.
Under the terms of the contract, Thiess will offer services such as mine planning and engineering, drilling and blasting, mining of overburden and ore, and rehandling services to the Leinster processing facility for an additional 34 months.
CIMIC Group CEO Michael Wright said: “We’re pleased to continue our support at Rocky’s Reward, delivering value through our mining expertise and our experience in planning and scheduling mining around existing underground workings.”
Thiess was awarded a contract in August 2015 to offer turnkey mining services at Rocky’s Reward, including mine planning, explosives, drill and blast services, waste removal, ore mining and technical services.
Thiess managing director Douglas Thompson said: “We look forward to building on our experience at Rocky’s Reward where we delivered strongly in production and safety.”
Nickel West is a fully-integrated nickel business of BHP with a portfolio of mining assets comprising the Mt Keith, Cliffs and Leinster mines.
The nickel business also includes a smelter in Kalgoorlie, a concentrator in Kambalda and a refinery in Kwinana.
