Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions has unveiled the electric Sandvik DR416iE, a rotary blasthole drill that extends its intelligent drilling range.
Sandvik DR416iE is the largest electrified rig in the company’s intelligent rotary blasthole suite and designed to enhance performance and sustainability in harsh mining environments.
Engineered to offer enhanced performance and sustainability in challenging mining operations, the Sandvik DR416iE rotary blasthole drill is ideal for iron ore and copper mining.
It can drill holes ranging from 270mm to 406mm in diameter.
The drill is powered by a 1,044kW electric motor, tailored to meet the high-altitude demands of mining applications.
Its electric system includes a soft starter, minimising the impact on the mine’s power supply and ensuring uninterrupted operation of other machinery.

By GlobalDataThe electric motor of the Sandvik DR416iE supports multiple voltages and frequencies. The optional 420m cable reel adds to its flexibility, allowing easy connection to the mine’s power infrastructure.
Operators will benefit from the DRi control system used across Sandvik’s i-series surface drills.
The Sandvik DR416iE incorporates a heavy-duty feed system to meet the needs of demanding hard rock conditions.
The hydraulic motor-driven chain feed system delivers increased pulldown force and weight on the bit, which translates to faster penetration rates.
Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions rotary drills product manager Nellaiappan Subbiah said: “Sandvik DR416iE represents a significant leap forward in electric blasthole drill technology and delivers rotary customers the option of a seamless transition from diesel to electric.
“Sandvik DR416iE uses the same modular platform as our largest diesel-powered rotary rig but with the added environmental benefits of electrification.
“We now offer customers the ability to convert a diesel-powered unit to a fully electrified version in the field. This innovative drill delivers unmatched performance, reliability and sustainability, making it an ideal choice for forward-thinking mining operations.”
Last month, Sandvik partnered with contract miner Byrnecut to develop diesel-electric loaders and trucks.
