Mining

TORC Robotics has delivered a remote control solution for a 40 yard³ shovel and 240t mining truck to a large open pit mining operation in the western US.

The company said that the mine recently experienced a series of landslides and that the resulting debris derailed production, as it created hazardous areas where workers could not access.

TORC delivered tele-operated systems that allow the remediation of high wall failures to start much sooner than it would have with manned equipment.

By using the company’s remote control systems, mine operators can quickly recover production levels that may have stalled due to the hazardous recovery.

The project manager said: "TORC has been instrumental in adding new capabilities that the mine has never had at their disposal previously and are very valuable."

A CAT 793D haul truck and a Hitachi EX5600 hydraulic excavator were converted using the TORC solution, in order to operate through a tele-operated control system.

"The move will enable the mine to continue working without putting personnel into risky and dangerous situations."

TORC Robotics said the equipment can quickly move between manual and tele-operated control by a single switch.

The company noted that equipment is manually driven to a transition zone, where the operator leaves the vehicle’s cab. The operator will then be directed into the integrated remote operations centre (IROC) that houses two operator stations and a spotter.

A nearby communications trailer offers a wireless communications link between the equipment and the operator. The vehicle will be driven remotely into the hazardous zone once the operator is in the remote control room.

The operator control station is designed to exactly mirror the control centre in the cab, enabling efficient manual and remote transitions for the workers.

TORC noted that the move will enable the mine to continue working without putting personnel into risky and dangerous situations.
