Community conservation organisation Save the Tarkine has filed a lawsuit over the granting of mining leases for Venture Minerals in Tasmania’s Tarkine region.
Mining leases were approved by the Tasmania Resources Minister and the application was subsequantly submitted to the Supreme Court to provide a statement of reasons for granting leases to the company for Mount Livingston and Mount Lindsay.
Scott Jordan from Save the Tarkine told ABC: "A statement of reasons [is what] the Minister’s required to provide to us under the Judicial Review Act and the Minister has refused on three of those occasions."
In August 2014, Venture Minerals announced the suspension of activities at its Riley Creek iron ore project citing legal action by the organisation, as well as low mineral prices.
The Federal Court permitted a new mine to proceed in Tasmania’s Tarkine region in May after dismissing a legal bid by Save the Tarkine to stop it.
Arguing that the mining would have a negative impact on eight threatened species, the group tried to block plans by the mining company to build the mine at Riley Creek near Tullah.
