Mawson Finland has announced the completion of the first phase of the EIA for the Rajapalot gold-cobalt project in northern Finland.
The project is of strategic importance to the EU’s green transition and has the potential to diversify the local industry.
This significant milestone marks the project’s advancement in its development journey, with the EIA process now moving to the second phase.
Mawson submitted the EIA Programme for the Rajapalot project to the Lapland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) on 31 August 2024.
The company received a statement on the EIA programme from the ELY Centre on 28 November 2024.
The statement from the ELY Centre includes feedback from stakeholders such as municipalities, national and regional authorities, research centres and reindeer herders.

By GlobalDataMawson Finland CEO Noora Ahola said: “The completion of the EIA programme represents more than just a procedural milestone for the Rajapalot project, it also strengthens Rajapalot’s position as a strategic asset for both Finland and the EU’s green transition.
“The Rajapalot project represents a unique opportunity to contribute to both the local and national economy in many ways while supporting Europe’s clean energy transition. We are committed to ensuring these benefits materialise while maintaining the highest environmental and social standards.
“We are not just planning to build a mine; we are setting high standards for responsible resource development in mine building. The feedback received during this phase will be instrumental in fine-tuning our environmental management strategies and ensuring we meet or exceed the stakeholder expectations.”
The EIA statement also provides valuable insights that will be considered in the second phase of the EIA procedure. With the first phase completed, Mawson can now actively promote land use planning processes in the region.
In conjunction with the EIA report, Mawson is advancing the phased regional land use planning process initiated by the Regional Council of Lapland.
This guides municipal-level land use plans in Rovaniemi and Ylitornio, where the project is located.
These land use planning processes are crucial for the project’s progression, ensuring that mining activities are balanced with environmental and community needs.
Four diamond drill rigs are set to mobilise at the Rajapalot site in early 2025 for the winter drilling campaign. Between 12,000m and 15,000m of diamond drilling is planned by April 2025.
The objectives are to extend and increase the inferred resource base of the Rajapalot project and test exploration targets developed during the 2024 field season.
