Brazil’s mining association Instituto Brasileiro de Mineração (IBRAM) is set to adopt the Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative developed by the Mining Association of Canada (MAC).
The corporate social responsibility programme aims to enhance environmental and social practices in the mining industry.
Besides IBRAM, six other mining associations implemented the TSM initiative, which is recognised internationally as a standard for responsible mining.
MAC freely provides TSM to other countries looking for tools to improve the environmental and social performance of their mining industries, in areas such as tailings management, civil society engagement, enhanced transparency and accountability.
Backed by MAC, IBRAM will test and analyse TSM’s performance to reflect the features of its domestic mining sector and proposes to implement the initiative for the next five years.
IBRAM president Flávio Ottoni Penido said: “By adopting TSM, we are committing to raise the standards of our industry. TSM will help our mining sector become more transparent, earn the confidence of Brazilian society and achieve its full potential.”

By GlobalDataPenido added that TSM is especially necessary for Brazil due to the tragic tailings dam failures over the past years.
MAC president and CEO Pierre Gratton said: “We are honoured that Brazil has chosen TSM as the vehicle to drive environmental and social performance in its mining sector and are proud of TSM’s increasingly global reach. TSM adherents now include mining associations in seven countries on five continents.
“The addition of IBRAM and Brazil’s large mining sector firmly establishes the TSM initiative as a leading global mining standard.”
TSM, which is a mandatory implementation programme for all MAC members’ Canadian operations, was launched in 2004.
