NACMA aims to combine expertise in mineral development, project financing, manufacturing and specialty processing to create a Canada-US network for manganese production and processing.

The alliance intends to meet the needs of industries such as advanced manufacturing, defence, aerospace and energy storage.

NACMA’s activities will focus on Canadian Manganese’s Woodstock Project in New Brunswick.

According to the parties, the project is intended as a long-term source of high-purity manganese products.

The alliance plans to establish two main industrial platforms.

In Canada, efforts will be focused on the Woodstock Project, mineral beneficiation, hydrometallurgical refining and production of intermediate manganese products.

In the US, plans include additive manufacturing feedstocks, advanced chemicals, alloys, battery materials, defence and aerospace materials, and specialty manganese processing.

Manganese is regarded as a critical mineral with applications in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, large-scale energy storage, specialty steels, advanced manufacturing and various defence uses.

The signatories of the agreement have outlined next steps that include technical assessments, commercial planning, government engagement, financing and strategic partnership discussions.

According to the announcement, the agreement sets forth collaboration principles but does not commit the parties to specific transactions until further definitive agreements are finalised.

Canadian Manganese Company president and CEO W. Matthew Allas said: “The establishment of NACMA represents an important milestone in realising our long-held vision for the Woodstock Project.

“Rather than viewing Woodstock as simply a mining project, we have always believed it should serve as the cornerstone of an integrated North American manganese industry.

“Through this alliance, we are bringing together the expertise required to build a secure allied supply chain that creates substantial long-term value for Canada, the US and strategic industrial partners.”
