Mining

Metal and mining company Vedanta Resources announced that its subsidiary, Sesa Sterlite (Sesa Goa), has resumed mining operations at its Karnataka mine.

India’s Supreme Court approved for Sesa Goa to continue with mining activities in Karnataka under stipulated conditions.

UK-based Vedanta has most of its assets in India and has been facing issues from the ban on iron ore mining in Karnataka and the Indian state of Goa.

The company received a set-back when a tribal community voted against the their proposal for a bauxite mining project in the Niyamgiri Hills in the Odisha state. The site is believed to be home to the deity, Niyam Rajawhich, worshipped by the Dongria Kondhhome tribe.

Vedanta said in a statement that iron ore businesses in Goa and Karnataka were impacted by the mining bans in the 2013 fiscal year and that its operating profit was reduced by $485.3m, compared to last year.

India had been ranked as the world’s third-largest exporter of iron ore and shipped more than $7bn worth of ore each year, until the mining restrictions slashed the country’s output and exports.
