A landslide that occurred at a jade mine near Lone Khin village located around 15km north of Hpakant in Kachin, Myanmar reportedly killed at least six people and trapped 20 others.
The landslide occurred at the site of the Moepin jade mine when the small-scale miners were searching for gemstones on a mountainside.
According to sources, the incident occurred after days of heavy downpours.
Work was suspended at the mine by operator Yadanar Yaung Chi, one month ago for the monsoon season.
None of the victims worked for the company.
The latest incident follows another similar mine disaster that occurred in November 2015 and killed about 100 people.
The landslide occurred due to the collapse of a man-made heap of waste soil mined out of the nearby jade mine. The cause of the collapse has not yet been determined.
The incident prompted Myanmar’s new government to tighten control over the country’s poorly regulated jade mines.
