Mining and automation robotics company Deltion Innovations has been awarded a contract by the Canadian Space Agency to work on a new device, which has been designed to perform future mining on the moon and Mars.
The new Percussive and Rotary Multi-Purpose Tool (PROMPT) has been designed for potential use on exploration and prospecting missions.
Deltion secured the $700,000 contract as part of the Canadian Space Agency’s (CSA) Space Technology Development Programme.
PROMPT is referred to as a ‘space-age Swiss Army knife’, and will unite elements of previous projects that were supported by CSA in a unit installed on the end of a robotic manipulator arm.
The new tool is integrated to attach and remove screws as well as bolts in robotic works, and will be designed to drill into rock and other materials and capture different samples.
PROMPT will be able to drill into the moon or Mars at small depths around 10cm and has the capacity to withstand extreme conditions.
