The top five companies accounted for 44% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that JFE filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the mining industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 77 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 100 in the previous quarter. It was followed by China Baowu Steel Group with 30 environmental sustainability patent filings, ArcelorMittal (27 filings), and POSCO (19 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 23% share of total patent filings
The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the mining industry in Q3 2024 was in China with 23%, followed by the US (20%) and Japan (12%). The share represented by China was 25% lower than the 48% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
