The top five companies accounted for 43% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that JFE filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the mining industry in Q2 2024. The company filed 50 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 147 in the previous quarter. It was followed by China Baowu Steel Group with 26 environmental sustainability patent filings, ArcelorMittal (22 filings), and POSCO (21 filings) in Q2 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 28% share of total patent filings
The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the mining industry in Q2 2024 was in China with 28%, followed by the US (12%) and Japan (11%). The share represented by China was 22% lower than the 50% share it accounted for in Q1 2024.
