The top five companies accounted for 45% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Mitsui Mining & Smelting filed the most batteries patents within the mining industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 16 batteries-related patents in the quarter, compared with 22 in the previous quarter. It was followed by POSCO with 10 batteries patent filings, Toyo Seikan Group (9 filings), and Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (9 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 24% share of total patent filings
The largest share of batteries related patent filings in the mining industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 24%, followed by Japan (17%) and China (11%). The share represented by the US was 14% higher than the 10% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
