Mining services provider Thiess has secured a three-year contract extension, valued at $A590m ($372.8m), to continue its operations at QCoal’s Northern Hub in Queensland, Australia.

The contract also includes an option for a further three-year extension.

The new contract reaffirms Thiess’ role in providing comprehensive mining services at the Northern Hub, encompassing statutory site control, mining activities, maintenance and asset management, and rehabilitation efforts.

Thiess executive chair and CEO Michael Wright said: “Thiess is proud to continue our work with QCoal at their Northern Hub operation, extending our long-term relationship focussed on providing safe and efficient mining operations, and progressive rehabilitation.”

This extension strengthens a long-standing relationship between Thiess and QCoal, with Thiess having first commenced operations at the Northern Hub in 2007 and managing the Collinsville Coal Mine from 1996 to 2013.

Thiess group executive Australia East Rae O’Brien said: “Thiess has been part of the Collinsville community since 1995, supporting the local economy and community, and providing employment opportunities within the region.

“Our work at QCoal Northern Hub commenced almost 20 years ago in 2007, and Thiess is pleased to have this opportunity to continue working in the region alongside QCoal.”

In January 2018, Thiess was awarded a A$480m contract by QCoal to continue operations at the Northern Hub, which includes the Sonoma, Sonoma North, Drake and Jax mines.

Further extending their partnership, in June 2022, Thiess received a $450m contract extension from QCoal to maintain operations at the Northern Hub mines.

In September 2024, Thiess teamed up with Flanders, a company specialising in machine electrification, to promote the decarbonisation of mining fleets.

This partnership will concentrate on offering solutions to mine operators in North America, and a letter of intent has also been established for operations in Australia and Asia.
