Minerals Development Oman (MDO), through its Mazoon Mining unit, has broken ground on the Mazoon Copper Project in Yanqul, Oman.
The Mazoon Copper Project is poised to become Oman’s largest integrated copper concentrate production project, spanning 20km².
It features five open-pit mines with an estimated 22.9 million tonnes of copper ore reserves. The construction includes a 56,000m² processing plant with the capacity to process 2.5 million tonnes per annum of copper ore.
The mine is projected to produce 115,000tpa of copper concentrate at a 21.5% copper grade.
Additionally, the project’s sustainability measures such as water recycling and waste management systems aim to protect the local environment including air quality and groundwater.
Oman Investment Authority chairman Abdul Salam bin Mohammed Al Murshidi said: “This project marks a transformative step in positioning Oman as a strategic copper hub, contributing to the diversification of our national economy and creating sustainable job opportunities for Omanis.
