Avalon Advanced Materials, a North American lithium producer, has entered into an MOU with Qualcomm Technologies to enhance mining innovation and technology solutions in Canada.

The partnership focuses on Avalon’s Thunder Bay lithium processing facility and aims to improve operational efficiency and data management.

Under the MOU, Avalon will utilise Qualcomm’s Industrial & Edge technologies to build a strong digital infrastructure for its mining operations.

The collaboration will develop a strategic road map for IoT-enabled solutions, aimed at commercialisation in the coming years.

This MOU is a significant step towards the adoption of innovation in the critical minerals sector and aligns with Ontario and Canada’s goals for a modern, technology-driven mining industry.

Avalon’s initiative to integrate advanced science and technology throughout the mineral development cycle supports national aspirations to enhance competitiveness, environmental performance and operational efficiency.

The partnership also aims to strengthen Ontario’s position as a centre for mining technology advancement. It encourages the growth of an ecosystem of Ontario-based technology SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) to support the digital transformation of Canada’s critical minerals sector.

By laying the foundation for transformative technologies, Avalon and Qualcomm’s collaboration promotes a more efficient mining innovation ecosystem.

It leverages Canadian mining innovation leadership and the country’s skilled workforce to establish a strong foundation for a resilient and sustainable mining industry in the future.

Avalon CEO Scott Monteith said: “Globally, the mining sector is undergoing a process of evolution in its practices and operations. By integrating Qualcomm Technologies’ cutting-edge IoT and AI solutions into our Thunder Bay lithium project, we aim to set a new standard for digitalisation in Canada.

“This partnership cultivates a stronger ecosystem of forward-thinking technology companies poised to accelerate data-driven advancements and strengthen Canada’s critical minerals supply chain.”

Last July, Avalon Advanced Materials signed an MOU with Finnish supplier Metso to develop a lithium processing facility in Ontario, Canada.
