Canada’s Alberta Government has committed to a C$5m ($3.6m) investment in E3 Lithium to advance the latter’s lithium brine demonstration facility.

The funding will be provided through the Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction fund.

It is earmarked for the company’s lithium brine demonstration facility, which aims to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate from Alberta’s brine resources.

Located near Olds, Alberta, the proposed demo project is intended to refine and chemically process brine into high-quality lithium carbonate, suitable for battery production. The Demo Project will also explore lithium hydroxide production offsite.

By integrating key components into a commercial-scale system, the demo project is expected to provide operational data and reduce risks associated with scaling up to a full commercial facility.

Alberta Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Rebecca Schulz said: “There is a critical minerals race happening worldwide, and with investments like this one, Alberta is leading.

“We are tapping into our province’s plentiful brine reserves, well-documented drill sites and talented oil and gas workforce to help E3 Lithium get its technology closer to commercialisation, setting the stage for Alberta to become a global leader in lithium production while stimulating investment and creating jobs here at home.”

E3 Lithium’s Demo Project is expected to reduce risks and gather production forecasts and well logistics.

E3 Lithium president and CEO Chris Doornbos said: “E3 is on the path to building a new industry in the province. As we prove the technology at an increasing scale, we increase the certainty that Alberta can be a major lithium-producing jurisdiction.

“ERA’s funding is crucial for developing a commercial facility and producing battery-grade lithium. This investment not only supports E3 but also opens new opportunities for the province and positions Alberta as a leader in critical minerals innovation.”
