A recently filed patent (Publication Number: US20230310048A1) describes a device and method for providing a bone cement paste from two starting components. The device consists of a hollow cylindrical cartridge with an interior space. The bone cement powder is stored in the proximal part of the interior space, while at least one bag containing a monomer liquid is stored in the distal part. The interior space can be connected to a negative pressure source via a vacuum connector. The device includes a dispensing plunger and a feed plunger, which, when pushed together, open the bag and allow the monomer liquid to flow into the distal part of the interior space. The proximal and distal parts of the interior space are connected via a conduit, which extends from the dispensing plunger into the distal part. The conduit has an axial length corresponding to at least a quarter of the bag length, ensuring a sufficient spacing between the plungers.

The patent also describes various features of the device. The conduit can be substantially dimensionally stable and can be formed as a hollow cylinder with at least one cylinder passage. The hollow cylinder has an inner diameter that allows accommodation of the bag. Alternatively, the conduit can be formed as a tube and/or a hose. The fluid-conducting conduit has an inner diameter of 0.5 mm to 2 mm. The distal part of the interior space includes opening means, such as a mandrel or cutting edge, for opening the bag. The proximal portion of the interior space is fluidically closed with a cartridge head, which can have a vacuum connector. A mixing tube, which can be displaced axially, is arranged in the cartridge head passage, and a detachable mixing rod can be placed within the mixing tube.

The method described in the patent involves pushing together the dispensing plunger and feed plunger to open the bag and continue pushing until the conduit is arranged on the feed plunger. Negative pressure is applied at the vacuum connector to convey the monomer liquid through the conduit into the proximal part of the interior space. The bone cement powder and monomer liquid are mixed using the mixing rod while applying negative pressure. The mixing rod can be detached and pulled out of the mixing tube, and the mixed bone cement paste can be discharged from the device by advancing the dispensing plunger towards the cartridge head.

Overall, this patent describes a device and method for efficiently providing a bone cement paste by combining two starting components. The device includes various features to ensure proper mixing and dispensing of the paste, while the method provides a step-by-step process for achieving the desired result.
