The global mining industry noticed an 11.7% drop in IT hiring activity in November 2022 over the previous month, led by Rio Tinto’s 9.44% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The mining industry’s overall hiring activity declined 9.49% when compared with October 2022.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.17% share of the global mining industry’s hiring activity in November 2022, down 0.16% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of November 2022 were 12.41% lower when compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 37.7% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a share of 34.33% emerged as the top IT occupation in the mining hiring activity in November 2022, a 34.43% decline over the previous month. Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers came in second with a share of 29.18% in November 2022, down 38.18% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 15.88% share in November 2022, a decline of 24.49% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with a 12.02% share in November 2022 and a drop of 58.82% over October 2022.
Top five mining companies by recruitment activity in November 2022
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 94.59% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global mining industry during November 2022 over October 2022.
Rio Tinto posted 22 IT jobs in November 2022 and registered a rise of 144.44% over the previous month, followed by Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile with 15 jobs and a 36.36% growth. Equinox Gold with 14 IT jobs and Freeport-McMoRan with 11 jobs, recorded a 133.33% growth and a flat growth, respectively, while TTP recorded a flat growth with 10 job postings during November 2022.
Regional composition of IT hiring in mining industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global mining IT hiring activity in November 2022 with a 37.34% share, which marked a 41.22% drop over the previous month.
Europe stood next with 30.9%, registering a 31.43% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 20.17% share and a 29.85% drop over October 2022.
In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 9.87% and a month-on-month drop of 8%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.72%, registering an 85.19% decrease over the previous month.
