Metso has secured a contract for the maintenance and wear parts supply of primary gyratory crusher at the First Quantum Minerals’s (FQM) Kevitsa copper-nickel mine in Sodankylä, Finland.

Earlier in this year, Kevitsa awarded a contract to Metso to supply and install wear parts and optimise components of its grinding mills.

Following Metso’s service, the company could cut service shutdown periods.

FQM Kevitsa maintenance planning manager Timo Ikäheimonen said: "When we made the decision to update our mill linings and switch from traditional liners to Metso’s innovative Megaliner, it became obvious that the primary gyratory crusher would be the next obstacle on our way to full capacity.

"At Kevitsa, we find it important to improve the entire plant in a balanced way instead of just optimising individual process parts."

Non-Metso suppliers are manufacturing the primary gyratory crusher and the grinding mills.

Metso regional sales manager Jouko Tolonen said: "The fact that Kevitsa is entrusting new parts of their process, whether Metso equipment or not, to us is a clear demonstration of Metso’s deep minerals processing knowledge and of the big difference our expert services can make in their business."

Metso said it would also design new accessories for the installation of the wear parts.

The Kevitsa mine is set to receive first crusher wear parts the fourth quarter and the maintenance programme would begin in 2016.

Metso signed a three-year lifecycle service agreement with the Kevitsa copper and nickel mine in April to take complete responsibility for the supply, installation and optimisation of the mine’s mill liners.
