The global mining industry noticed a 2.8% drop in IT hiring activity in April 2022 over the previous month, led by Anglo American’s 7.86% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The mining industry’s overall hiring activity declined 3.9% when compared with March 2022.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.07% share of the global mining industry’s hiring activity in April 2022, down 0.16% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of April 2022 were 2.18% lower when compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 5.92% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 45.28% emerged as the top IT occupation in the mining hiring activity in April 2022, an 18.18% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 17.92% in April 2022, down 24% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 14.78% share in April 2022, a decline of 17.54% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with an 11.32% share in April 2022 and a drop of 18.18% over March 2022.
Top five mining companies by recruitment activity in April 2022
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 29.89% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global mining industry during April 2022 over March 2022.
Anglo American posted 25 IT jobs in April 2022 and registered a drop of 24.24% over the previous month, followed by ArcelorMittal with 24 jobs and a 380% growth. RTI International Metals with 24 IT jobs and Nucor with 22 jobs, recorded a 33.33% growth and a 69.23% rise, respectively, while Teck Coal recorded a flat growth with 18 job postings during April 2022.
Regional composition of IT hiring in mining industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global mining IT hiring activity in April 2022 with a 51.26% share, which marked an 8.94% drop over the previous month.
Asia-Pacific stood next with 23.58%, registering a 23.47% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 17.3% share and a 25.68% drop over March 2022.
In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 4.72% and a month-on-month rise of 87.5%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 3.14%, registering a 52.38% decrease over the previous month.
