The global mining industry noticed a 1.5% rise in IT hiring activity in July 2021 over the previous month, led by Gold Fields’s 10.86% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The mining industry’s overall hiring activity declined 4.72% when compared with June 2021.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 3.72% share of the global mining industry’s hiring activity in July 2021, up 0.37% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of July 2021 were 2.26% higher compared with the previous month.
The increase was a result of 3.55% lower job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 44% emerged as the top IT occupation in the mining hiring activity in July 2021, a 1.91% decline over the previous month. Computer Support Specialists came in second with a share of 16.29% in July 2021, up 9.62% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 14.29% share in July 2021, decline of 23.08% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 12.29% share in July 2021 and drop of 6.52% over June 2021.
Top five mining companies by recruitment activity in July 2021
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average an increase of 13.49% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global mining industry during July 2021 over June 2021.
Gold Fields posted 38 IT jobs in July 2021 and registered a rise of 22.58% over the previous month, followed by Rio Tinto with 32 jobs and a 45.45% rise. Polyus with 31 IT jobs and Glencore with 26 jobs, recorded an 11.43% decline and an 18.75% drop, respectively, while RTI International Metals recorded a 166.67% growth with 16 job postings during July 2021.
Regional composition of IT hiring in mining industry
Asia-Pacific emerged as the leading region in the global mining IT hiring activity in July 2021 with a 40% share, which marked a 2.94% growth over the previous month.
North America stood next with 34.86%, registering a 7.96% month-on-month increase. Europe was the third leading region with a 12% share and a 57.58% decline over June 2021.
In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 9.71% and a month-on-month growth of 161.54%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 3.43%, registering a 9.09% increase over the previous month.
